Planet Indonesia’s

10 Year Anniversary

A decade of action,

a future of hope

A note from our founders

A decade of action. It almost feels unbelievable that we have hit this milestone from our very humble beginnings, when we were figuring out how to tackle these large social, cultural, and environmental crises in our tiny office (that doubled as a house). This milestone reflects our unwavering commitment to conserving at-risk ecosystems across Indonesia and supporting communities in leading the way.

A future of hope. This space aims to celebrate the journey and impact we have had to date and share some of our exciting plans for the future. We invite you to reflect and celebrate with us.

Thank you to all who have joined us and the communities we accompany to support their vision for a better future.

See Planet Indonesia’s Core Model in action. Designed as a mechanism for inclusive problem-solving and decision-making across economic, social and ecological issues at the village level.

Storytelling has served as humanity's bridge across cultures and generations, conveying knowledge, values, and insights that may have otherwise gone unnoticed. So it only made sense to use the power of storytelling to strengthen our relationships and work with communities.

Since June 2023, field facilitators have been helping community members to record their experiences in the form of short stories. This initiative helps field teams understand the perceptions and expectations of interventions and uncover emerging challenges or opportunities for communities.

NEW: This interactive map showcases those community stories directly from the field.
Selected stories from Charles, Idham, Raja, and Ghufron.

Stories from the field

We feel greatly supported by Planet Indonesia. The team has not only helped us understand the importance of organization and health but also taught us how to manage family finances. This has truly transformed our way of life.”

The pages below allow you to explore our journey and impact over time in greater detail.

  • Climate and Ecosystem Health

With help from Maya Climate, we have an exciting new impact report that analyzes the health of the forests, from mangroves to montane rainforest, where we work.

We are encouraged to see that, deforestation is decreasing 2-7 times faster in sites where we work, the use of fire dropped by 65%, and in some areas forest cover has increased by 34.98%.

We are moving to keeping crucial carbon-rich, primary forest standing.

  • Thriving communities

By supporting communities to establish governance and management practices that are entirely community-led, helping them access and take ownership of their surrounding ecosystems and by supporting resilient livelihoods and financial systems we aim to create the enabling conditions to effectively conserve biodiversity, combat climate change, and ensure equitable access to life-sustaining resources.

We are currently working with 42,000 families and our goal is to increase this to support 65,000 families by 2026.

  • The rise of wildlife

Communities have recorded a steady reduction in poaching from SMART patrol data over time, and increased protection of vital forest, marine, and coastal habitats.

The total encounter rate for all wildlife has increased over the last 6 years including critically endangered species such as the Helmeted hornbill, whose population has stabilized. Pamgolins and orangutans are finding new safe havens and caged songbirds have new opportunities to live in the wild after Planet Indonesia opened West Kalimantan’s first dedicated songbird rescue and rehabilitation center.

  • The relationship between environmental, social, and economic outcomes

There is a clear relationship between holistic community-level interventions and positive cross-sectoral results.

The big picture

Being evidence-driven is a core founding principle of ours. Over the years we have produced a number of scientific publications, technical reports, and published data that we have used to inform our approach and understand the pathways of impact. We asked ourselves…

… how can we share our research and the lessons we have learned? …

launching our digital

learning center

New

An interactive space for practitioners, researchers, students, supporters, and all who want to dive into the evidence, lessons learned, and technical aspects of how the Planet Indonesia model works and the impact it has created.

This resource is designed to inspire, guide, and support collaborative efforts for a sustainable future. Join us as we reflect on what works, what doesn’t, and how together, we support communities to drive change.

* This is the first iteration of the platform and we plan on expanding and developing it further in the future.

We have seen progress, but the reality is that about 26.4 million people live in poverty in Indonesia. Over the last 2 decades, Indonesia lost approximately 30.8 million hectares of forest. Wildlife are facing extinction-level threats and communities are on the frontline, facing climate change, deforestation and land grabbing, and still lack access to basic socio-economic services.

The good news is our model works. We have spent the last decade listening to communities, perfecting our approach and proving it works. Now we are on the precipice, taking our work to scale across Indonesia, supporting more communities than ever before.

Over the next two years, we want to scale our work to help 23,000 more families and protect 1.25 million hectares of vital ecosystems.

Your donation will help power our proven approach and bring about the much-needed impact for people and the planet.

We are aiming to raise $30,000 by January 1st. We need your support in getting us there.

Power the Next Decade of Change

Thank You.

Here’s to the next 10 years.
